David Harrison founded Flourish Retirement Coaches after he retired and immediately began encountering health problems. He noticed those around him had similar issues along with many who seemed discouraged and disappointed in their retirement.
As David began researching retirement, he discovered that most retirees suffer a series of problems and adversities that have nothing to do with how much they saved for retirement. In fact, the size of their retirement cache could do nothing to resolve most of the other issues.
When retiring, many retirees think they will now have the next 20- 30 years to have fun and do anything they want. The reality is that our window of time to pursue our retirement dreams may actually be very short. Most certainly, life can change very quickly as we age. We have sacrificially saved for years for this time in our lives, making our financial preparation one of our highest priorities. What no one told us, and what we have failed to anticipate, are problems and adversities that have little to do with our investments. We have been very prepared by our financial advisors and counselors. We followed their advice and scrimped and saved and finally we have repeatedly passed the Monte Carlo simulation and with a little apprehension pulled the plug and retired.
Why is it that nearly one-third of recent retirees will be clinically depressed within three years of retirement? Little emphasis has been placed on the non-financial issues we will face and how devastating it is to be blindsided by a sudden stroke or heart attack. Two of my good friends died of a sudden heart attack this year, just a few years from retiring. Can you imagine the grief, and confusion their widows are experiencing as they now look at retirement alone. We live in a fallen world where we are assured of trials and adversities. At retirement age, those adversities involving our health seem to accelerate and come on with a vengeance. It may turn out that our “Golden Years” will only be golden for our Doctors!
There are five areas of our life that are affected by our transition into retirement, the Spiritual, the social, the Mental, the Physical, and the Financial. Flourish Retirement Coaches was founded with the burden of assisting fellow Christians to experience a victory in those first four, non-financial areas of our life. The reality is that we will all face trials and adversities in our lives. If we are blessed to live into our 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s, the key to a successful, fulfilling retirement is learning to know peace, comfort and hope in the midst of adversities.
As believers in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we already know how the book ends. We will have the victory! 1 Corinthians 15:57 tells us, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”. And 1 John 5:4 says “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”
